I was suffering from ANALYSIS PARALYSIS: What was I thinking?
I looked at my personal library today and noticed I had bought a book way back in 2008 that was chock-full of Affiliate Marketing success stories.
The book was eMillions: Behind-The-Scenes Stories of 14 Successful Internet Millionaires by Stanley Tang. I have read it a couple of times over the years and like all of my personally owned books, it has underlines, highlighter swatches and dog-eared pages around all of the good parts. But, I sure didn’t put it to use as soon as I read it the first time.
Why not I asked myself and you are probably asking too? After all, I had just read about 14 self-made millionaires who had made their riches from the web-based businesses they had built from the ground up. That’s exactly what I wanted to do! They weren’t any different than me. They too were normal, average, everyday Joe’s and Josette’s that had put their dream into action and made it happen. Now, here I was. I had just read how they had accomplished it and yet I didn’t do a damn thing with that information. What had held me back from doing it?
As I stood there looking at the book, it occurred to me that I had everything I needed to make “IT” happen way back then and yet, I continued to “get ready to get ready.” Had I began to take massive action back then, I would be a hell of a lot further today than I am. Learn from others’ mistakes. Learn from MY mistakes.
As the old adage goes, you can lead a horse to water but you can’t make him drink. It was easy to read the book and get excited about finding Internet fortunes. Actually putting in the work and time required to emulate their success was an entirely different animal. Obviously, I didn’t want it bad enough back then. Today is a different day.
The Pareto Principle is appropriate here. Also known as the 80/20 Rule. Keep reading. Keep learning. BUT, keep that part to 20% and spend 80% of your time taking massive action and moving your business forward! Otherwise, you too will be looking back in 12 years and asking yourself what the hell you were thinking!
Use your time strategically. Read my blog posts to learn more when you are waiting somewhere for something like the oil to be changed in your car or waiting for the dinner to come to your table. Use the time you are near your computer to put that knowledge to use and build your site and create tons of high-quality content that will help others get the useful information they are looking for and propel your business to new heights.
You don’t have to “know it all” to start. You just have to know enough to get going. Chances are, you already know enough to get started. If not, read The How-To’s here on Advance Dynamix and you will. Hell, just reading this one post alone is enough to get you going in the right direction!
According to Wikipedia, Analysis Paralysis is the stoppage of progress due to a lack of decision making and a lack of taking action.
The good news is, it doesn’t matter if you have been getting ready to get ready for two days or two decades. Changing it all right now is totally your decision. You can make it happen. All you have to do is make a conscious decision to begin taking action.
Take action doing the things that matter instead of the things that “seem” like they matter but really don’t. Deep down inside, we all know the difference. Constant and recurrent action that moves you closer and closer toward your goal is what matters. Then, when you reach those goals, you give new, bigger and better goals serious thought. Figure out exactly what you want to set your sights on again and go make it happen again. This is the Dynamix of Advancement.
Most of us have a pretty good idea of what we should be doing. Unfortunately, it sounds much easier than it really is. All too often we find ourselves getting sidetracked by stupid things that don’t make any type of difference whatsoever in our lives. Before you know it, you are sitting there drinking beer and watching reruns of Game of Thrones or wandering aimlessly from store to store through the local mall. Yes, these types of things are fun to do but in the grand scheme of things they are not helping us in the realm of advancement toward our ultimate goals.
In his book, The Millionaire Fastlane, author MJ DeMarco talks about working around the clock in his little studio apartment. He didn’t spend his time doing anything other than working to accomplish his goal. He sold that company for tens of million dollars. The buyer ran it into the ground in short order and MJ was able to buy it back again at a fire sale price. This time, he built it back up and then sold it for a HUGE sum!
Even to this day, MJ doesn’t do anything on Facebook. He’s not a time-waster. He is definitely the minority. He has figured it out and mastered it. And it has paid off for him. Today, he is a self-made multi-millionaire and set for life. And yet, that does not stop him. He continues to work hard towards building his net worth more and more by continuing to create content and add value that helps others like you and me figure out how to get where he is. He continues to do this day in and day out.
In case you couldn’t tell already, MJ DeMarco is one of my absolute heroes. The Millionaire Fastlane is my favorite book of all time and has been since the first time I read it. I haven’t met MJ yet but I will one day.
Be careful. It is easy to get caught up in working towards your goals and overlook the importance of spending time with your family and loved ones. Just don’t spend all of your time doing things that aren’t going to meet your goals. Once again, the 80/20 rule applies. Spend 80% of your free time doing what you should be doing in order to reach your goals. Spend 20% of your time spending quality time with your loved ones.
Sometimes, it makes it easier to stay on track with little hacks. One of those hacks is to keep a journal. Write down every single day exactly what you did that day to move towards your goal. Once a week, go back and examine what you did for the last 7 Days. Make changes where you need to. Hold yourself accountable. Set alarms on your cell phone to remind you that it’s time to get your ass off of the couch and go back to work.
How much sleep do you really need each night? Maybe you can accomplish more by getting up an hour or two earlier than you normally do and hitting it hard in the peak morning hours of the day.
Another way to hold yourself accountable is to hire a coach. That is their job. Good ones are worth their weight in gold. Bad ones, not so much. They help you move forward and they hold you accountable.
Be careful here though. Anyone can call themselves a coach. Make sure you are learning from someone who has already done what you are trying to do. I hired a supposed coach a couple of years ago that turned out to be a total waste of my time and money. I got scammed. There was no more progress during that time than there would have been with me just doing my thing on my own. Then, a few months after I ended the coaching sessions, I got an email from that guy asking me if he could borrow several thousand dollars to send his kid to college. Are you kidding me!? That was wrong on multiple levels.
Join a group of other entrepreneurs where accountability is a major component of the group. There are many Facebook groups out there and message boards. I have found that free ones attract a lot of useless bullshit. The ones that require payment to join creates a barrier to entry by doing so and usually are of a higher quality because of this. Additionally, they are usually policed better by the posters who add good value to the group on a regular basis.
It’s extremely easy to fall off the wagon and end up doing things that shouldn’t be done. Peter F. Drucker once said there is nothing so useless as doing efficiently that which should not be done at all. Smokey the Bear once said only you can prevent forest fires. Well, only you can prevent the forest fire of wasting your damn time also. Get your stuff together and go make things happen.
The business of your dreams is just sitting out there in the universe waiting for you to jump in and put it together. It was sitting there waiting for me in 2008 when I first bought that book (and many, many others for that matter) and yet I did nothing for many years after reading them. Why? I could sit here and make excuses all day long but I’m not going to. It’s mine. I own it. I wasted years of time I could have been making it happen. It’s up to you. Make your own, personal conscious effort right now to work your ass off and JUST ROCK IT! 🚀 🚀 🚀 Or else, you could find yourself saying, “ANALYSIS PARALYSIS: What was I thinking?”
