NEVER GIVE UP! Your perseverance is of utmost importance
Sir Winston Churchill is often credited with saying, “Never, never, never give up!” Actually, he gave a short speech that included that statement but it was much more in depth than just that one, awesome statement.
An additional portion of his speech that I feel bears repeating went like this, “Never give in, never give in, never, never, never, never-in nothing, great or small, large or petty – never give in except to convictions of honour and good sense.” Definitely great words of wisdom AND great words of encouragement and motivation. Definitely words of a leader.
Everyone knows Churchill was a very successful British politician but most do not know his mother was actually of American descent. It was an interesting fact I didn’t know until I began conducting research for this particular blog post.
Although Churchill is widely known for having a very successful career repeatedly demonstrating his great leadership skills, his life was also wrought with much trial and tribulation as well. I suspect it was the latter that gave him the wisdom for this particular speech.
As a very famous, ancient proverb goes, Fall down seven times, get up eight. I couldn’t agree more. Life kicks us all in the teeth. Some of us more than others. You always have two choices. You can either, 1) Give in and give up or, 2) Get back up and get after it. The choice is 100% yours. No one can do it for you.
“Life is 10% what happens to me and 90% of how I react to it. And so it is with you… we are in charge of our Attitudes.”~Pastor Charles “Chuck” Swindoll
Perseverance is an extremely powerful quality many don’t work hard enough at. Also called tenacity, it doesn’t come easy for anyone. As they say, if it were easy, everyone would be doing it.
Do you know why employers put so much emphasis on college graduates? At first glance, many assume it is because of the higher education they received during those formidable years. And although that may be partially true, it is definitely not the number one reason.
Employers know a couple of things are in play with obtaining a college education. First and foremost, the student had four years (at least four years, dependent upon how far they went) to quit anytime they wanted. They could have quit their college courses at any time they wanted without fear of any type of black mark such as a Dishonorable Discharge going on their record.
Many, many students do drop out. As you can see in this study, the “I quit!” rate is pretty high. Employers are looking for people who aren’t quitters.
This same concept is leveled up even more with former members of Special Forces groups such as the Navy Seals, Army Rangers or Marine Force Recon. Why? Many, many hard-chargers with great intentions try to become members of these elite groups but few succeed. Not only does being a member of one of these elite groups of badasses require great tenacity, it also guarantees the individual is a team-player.
Employers jump at the chance to hire successful operators and rightfully so. Those guys develop a hell of a lot more leadership skills than someone who just went to college. Why? Because the lives of others depend on it. That’s why.
NEVER SAY NEVER
Okay, okay, I can hear a couple of you right now. “You just said never give up and now, you are saying to never say never. What gives!?
There is a time to cut your losses and move on. Unfortunately, most of us do it far too soon. I have started many business ventures over the years that could and would have made a very nice income. All of which I gave up on entirely too early.
I would have definitely given up with Advance Dynamix too except for one thing. The more I studied successful affiliate marketers, the more I heard one recurring message. That message is is this:
Affiliate Marketing is anything but a get-rich-quick scheme! It takes hundreds and maybe even thousands of hours of hard work and two to five years before you are going to see any type of return on your investment. If you were looking for a free lunch, try the soup kitchen because you ain’t gonna find it here, my friend!
The good news is, it is way easier to stay in the game when you go into it with this knowledge in the forefront of your mind. I’m the perfect example of that. I didn’t quit and I continued to work hard even though I wasn’t seeing the progress I would have liked to have seen. I knew that eventually, all of my hard work and perseverance would pay off. You must believe in yourself. Believing in yourself is absolutely imperative. If you don’t, how in the hell could you expect anyone else to?
THE DIP: A LITTLE BOOK THAT TEACHES YOU WHEN TO QUIT
Marketing guru Seth Godin wrote this little book known as The Dip. The back of the book asks, “What is the dip?” Some of the answers are, 1) It is the 7th time you fall on your butt while snowboarding, 2) It is the garage band playing to an empty club out in the middle of nowhere and, 3) It is any rough patch you have to go through before achieving your big goal……if in fact, you are chasing the right goal to begin with!
The editorial review from Publishers Weekly states, “”the Dip, “the long slog between starting and mastery” in which those without the determination will find themselves burning out.” In my opinion, that sums it up very well. This book is less than a hundred pages and Entrepreneur Magazine said, “It’s a must-read for any aspiring entrepreneur.” I couldn’t agree more.
Seth Godin has written many excellent books. The Dip is one of them.
I was listening to one of the old James Martell “Affiliate Buzz” podcasts earlier today. James passed away in 2018. May he rest in peace.
James was one of the Online Affiliate Marketing trailblazers from the beginning. He started his online business back in 1998 and absolutely rocked it up until the day he passed. He recognized the Power of the Internet and busted his ass to put together an Internet-based business. He damn sure did that! He was self-taught and a self-made multi-millionaire thanks to the Power of the Internet and his ability to see it.
James’ guest today was a former student by the name of Brent Truitt. They had become friends back in the early 2000’s and had been friends ever since.
During the podcast, Brent stated he got lazy for a while. Then, he went on to elaborate about the laziness he was referring to. His “laziness” consisted of three years of “doing nothing but golfing.” He chuckled and went on to say that was all thanks to the power of an Internet business. How cool is that?! Could you do nothing but play golf for three years and still be okay?
Maybe not right now but you could! These badasses went on to talk about the importance of perseverance when it comes to building your affiliate marketing business. Back in 2018 when they were recording this podcast, the average time for a blog post to rank was eight months. It’s longer than that now. A little over nine months on average. Nevertheless, the same principles still hold true. Keep working hard, don’t give up and keep learning. Eventually, you WILL be able to make it happen if you don’t give up and you keep working your ass off!
The bottom line is that you must persevere if you are going to reach your goals. Your perseverance is the most important part of the equation. Without tenacity, you have no chance. Even when you are not seeing any type of return on investment whatsoever, it is absolutely imperative that you continue to fight the good fight and make shit happen!
