“Whether you think you can or you think you can’t, you’re right” ~ Henry Ford
When I was a kid, just like every other kid in America, I was forced to read stupid stuff in school that I couldn’t care less about. Books that someone with a ton of formal education and letters behind their name had christened as a must-read for kids. If they would replace those time-wasting “classics” with the books I have listed below, the Country would be impacted in many awesome ways.
After highschool, I discovered there was much more to the public library than just housing those books I had hated. Much to my enlightenment, I found there were many books there that I found to be extremely interesting and beneficial. This epiphany would change my life forever. Then Audible came along. WHAT?!?! Now, I can go through books no matter what else I am doing. Life is GOOD!
My book journey began with Rich Dad, Poor Dad – What The Rich Teach Their Kids About Money – That The Poor And Middle Class Do Not! by Robert Kiyosaki. I love that book but it isn’t my favorite! RD/PD inspired me to read many other books with similar content and to seek additional content from the Internet. It was the mid to late 90’s and the Internet was just beginning to gain traction. I knew it was going to be big and held many keys to untold riches but I just couldn’t figure out how to make it produce massive amounts of wealth for me back then.
The Rich Dad product line included a message board where Rich Dad fans could congregate and share information. One of the other members there posted a looooooong post one day about his journey from being a limo driver to quitting his job, moving to Phoenix and starting his Internet-based business. It was extremely interesting, intriguing and inspirational. So much so, I immediately copied it, pasted it into an email and sent it back to myself so I could read it again whenever I wanted to. I still have that email today. That poster called himself MichaelJohn back then.
The Millionaire Fastlane – Crack the Code to Wealth and Live Rich for a Lifetime! by MJ DeMarco is my number one pick. My absolute favorite author by far is MJ DeMarco! He has only written two books but they are both awesome. My copy of his first one, The Millionaire Fastlane is a dog-eared, highlighted, underlined, bookmarked and well-loved mess. I have gone back through it many times. He released his second book, Unscripted in 2017. UNSCRIPTED: Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Entrepreneurship by MJ DeMarco is every bit as good as the first one.
I have often jokingly referred to The Millionaire Fastlane as “Rich Dad, Poor Dad on steroids.” When I first read my copy, I immediately recognized the intro contained many of the same happenings as “The Story of MichaelJohn” that I had read years before on the Rich Dad forum. I reached out to MJ and was totally surprised he responded to begin with and additionally surprised to learn that it had in fact been him making that post years before. If you haven’t read his books yet, they are both must-reads.
Think and Grow Rich by Napolean Hill is also a must-read. This book has been called the “Granddaddy of All Motivational Literature. It was originally published in 1937 so it’s a little wonky when read today but the general gist is still quite good today. According to Wikipedia, Business Week magazine’s Best-Seller List ranked it the sixth best-selling paperback business book 70 years after it was published. Today, the original copy is now in the Public Domain so it can be found all over the Interwebs for free. If you would rather get a paperback version, you can find them for a penny on eBay. I’ve listed the 13 steps below. Sex Transmutation was a pretty racy topic back in 1937!
The 13 “steps” listed in the book are:
- Specialized Knowledge
- Organized Planning
- Power of the Master Mind
- The Mystery of Sex Transmutation
- The Subconscious Mind
- The Brain
- The Sixth Sense
CRUSHING IT! How Great Entrepreneurs Build Their Business and Influence-and How You Can, Too! by Gary Vaynerchuk is totally on-board with what we are doing here at Advance Dynamix. I have been through this book twice, so far. In the book, he talks about one highly successful reader who still reads his original book, CRUSH IT! once a year. That dude is a self-made multi-millionaire and still reads his ten-year-old book every year. What does THAT tell you!!?? This one is no different. You MUST read this book at least twice.
I chuckle as I read through the negative reviews on Amazon of this book. Some people feel better about themselves when they bitch about others. I’ll never understand that concept. I bet if you lined up bank accounts, it would be even more laughable. Grant Cardone says he loves the haters because they at least know his name and brand. I suppose that’s a great way to look at it!
One Million Followers: How I Built a Massive Social Following in 30 Days: Growth Hacks for Your Business, Your Message, and Your Brand from the World’s Greatest Minds is a new one but absolutely awesome! This guy has built the personal brands of all kinds of people you have heard of. He built his to over 1,000,000 in less than 30 days on Facebook. Whoa! The guy is a freaking animal! This book just totally reverberates what I have been saying all along. It is an absolutely fantastic time to be alive! This IS the gold-rush of the century. If you don’t jump, it’s your own damn fault!
The Magic of Thinking BIG by Dr. David Schwartz is another awesome book. It was written in 1959 so you have to do a little new millennium translation in your head as you read it too if you are reading an original copy. There are updated copies available that make it a much easier read. He proves you don’t need to be a scholar or have natural talent to attain great success and satisfaction in life in general, whether it be business or personal, but you do need to learn and understand the habit of thinking and behaving in ways that will get you where you want to be. This book is also partially responsible for the way I think.
The 10X Rule by Grant Cardone. With a name like Grant, he’s gotta be cool, right!? 😎 I absolutely love this book. I have the Audible version that he narrated himself. He throws little quips in that certain parts aren’t in the physical version of the book because his publisher never would have allowed that. LOL
The 10X Rule is The Magic of Thinking BIG for the 21st century. It’s primary message is that your dreams and goals are too small.
This book is jam-packed with information that is going to help you 10X your business and yout life in general. I like Grant Cardone because he is genuine, down-to-earth, extremely sharp and full of energy.
The 32 actions of successful people he lists out in this book are excellent. How many do you practice on a daily basis? I know I definitely have room for improvement in my daily life! Grant really drives home the concept of not wasting a bunch of time figuring shit out. Pull the trigger, make it happen in a massive way and THEN figure it out as your are going along. This concept is so important amd most people just don’t get it. Let ‘er rip, Taterchip!
The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People – Powerful Lessons in Personal Change by Dr. Stephen Covey is another great one. It is another book that has helped to shape the way I think. Dr. Covey has taken his 7 Habits concept to great levels by applying the Habits to many different niches. Integrity, honesty and looking at things in a positive light are recurring themes with Dr. Covey. He’s a good man and a good author. Number 7 is my favorite Habit but I’m not letting the proverbial cat outta the bag here. You have to go read the book to find out what it is! 🙂
Unlimited Power: The New Science Of Personal Achievement by Tony Robbins is a life-changing book. He teaches a technique he calls neurolinguistic programming (NLP) that enables you to become successful at just about anything. Have you ever experienced Tony Robbins? Whoa! Tony is a smart, charismatic ball of fire! He has changed many lives with his books, videos, speaking engagements, etc. His Author Biography on Amazon says, “Tony Robbins has helped more than 50 million people from more than 100 countries transform their lives and their businesses through his books, audio programs, health products, live events and personal coaching. He’s been fortunate enough to work with everyone from presidents of countries to some of the true legends of entertainment, sports and the business world. But his work is not limited to Fortune 500 CEOs and athletes.” Good stuff!
How To Get Rich – One of the World’s Greatest Entrepreneurs Shares His Secrets by Felix Dennis was a fun read. He was an ornery man who knew exactly what he enjoyed in life and that is exactly what he did. Felix Dennis was responsible for building a publishing empire. Probably his most famous piece of work was Maxim Magazine. It’s still going strong today. At the time of his death, he was worth hundreds of millions of dollars, all of which were self-made dollars.
These are some of the most important books I have read. They have all helped to shape the way I think and who I am today. They all have a common thread running through them of MINDSET. I can’t stress enough the importance of this one word in your entire life. How you think directly affects how you act and/or react and the outcome of any situation.
There are a few Negative Nancy’s out there who scoff and call me a Pollyanna. That’s okay. They are entitled to their opinion and their opinion is no business of mine. However, it’s unfortunate but they possess a very self-limiting attitude and would probably be able to achieve much more in life and be much happier if they too had read the above books and learned how to change the way they think. One of my favorite quotes is, “Two men in prison look out through the bars, one sees mud, the other sees stars.” I like to say, “There is an upside to just about everything.” It’s our job to find it and highlight it rather than focusing on the negative. As James Allen alluded to in his 1903 masterpiece, As a Man Thinketh, there is a direct correlation between the way your mind works and your level of happiness.
